BIRD ON THE LOOSE

This sweet little hummingbird is not actually sitting on the perfect little perch, he is sitting on the pull cord for the garage door opener inside our garage...thats right he is totally thinking this is the perfect spot...
We were getting ready to go to dinner and Mr. S. was surprised to find 3 hummingbirds buzzing around inside the garage...they all found their way out, except this little one...he just could not get his directions right...
He finally decided to sit on top of the cabinets.  We went on to dinner and thought once we returned he would be so excited to get out of that garage, even though the side door was open, when we returned he was still sittin there totally confused...you could tell he had been running into things trying to figure it out...

If you look real carefully you will see this little red dot of blood on his beak where he has run into things trying to find his way out...so sad to watch...Now he just looked tired...
I thought it best to just leave the big door open and wait it out for awhile with him just to see if he could figure it out...the door opens up the whole side of the garage, it's a big space...
He has the most beautiful colors on his neck and back...I had a bit of time to study him  as I was waiting I think he has hurt his foot as well, he seems to be favoring it...

Oh his poor beak....he's such a brave little soul.....

You can see the red dot of blood from his beak  on the garage door cord to the right..

He has even mussed his head feathers...
Now he has found his way to the top of the garage door, then he just decided to land on the garage floor, exhausted, I am guessing...I put him in a plastic container and put him in the flowers in the front, he seemed so tired...after about an hour I had to go back, I thought if he was till there I would have to take action, I wanted to make sure he did not fall pray to a roaming cat, I put him in the plastic container and brought him to the back deck beside the den..I put in the container a couple of lids of sugar water, one he sat in and soaked his feet and the other one he delighted in sipping...he even let me stroke his beak with a little sugar water...so trusting...
After I stroked his back awhile and waited and waited,  all of a sudden he got up and flew into my den....oh no, here he is on the ceiling fan, he is feeling so much better...
I must tell you, Tina was such a lady, however she did notice him on the ceiling fan, like she couldn't believe what she was seeing, however she did not move...

Now you can see he has decided to sit on top of the chandy in the kitchen, nice and warm on those cold wet sticky feet I will bet you....he is lovin that....

After he warmed his feet awhile and rested some, he just decided to fly out the door...I sure hope I see him at the feeder tomorrow...I will let you know if he is back for breakfast...I will keep you posted on any further sightings of Mr. Hummer....

  4. Love your story ~ so sweet. What a special treat to get to hold and see a hummingbird that close up. I had a chickadee many years ago now that used to eat out of my hand in the winter and it was such a special thing to me. Just feeling those little feet in my hand is something I will never forget. I hope he comes back and remains your friend.

  8. What a wonderful post! It's so hard to capture one good picture of a hummingbird, and you got so many! How wonderful that you were able to nurse him back to taking flight. I hope he shows up every day, just to say thanks. laurie

  9. Oh, I loved reading this post and seeing the wonderful photos of that cute little bird. You are a sweet soul to care so much. It sure had an adventure at your house and is likely to remember the nice lady with the watchful kitty!

  10. Wow, what a story! That is just incredible that you were able to bring him inside and nurse him until he was sufficiently recovered! The photos are marvelous, too. We have to keep our garage door closed this time of year, because birds love building nests on our garage shelves. So cozy, I guess!

  12. Visiting back from HouseOfFabForLess. Such a cute story and all the pics! We have the same problem here at my house. a couple times EVERY year a bird (many time humming) flies into our garage and can't make its way out. I did have one come through the back door last fall and pooped about my kitchen before he finally flew back out the door! Nice to meet you! Lisa

  13. Oh my, this poor little bird. I hope he is okay. You have some wonderful pictures of birds on your blog. We started getting into bird feeding and some picture taking this past summer but surely haven't gotten to your level of bird photography. Looking forward to exploring your blog some more. 16. This is so sweet...I sure hope he is fine now. Thank you for visiting me the other day...and I will take your idea about my font being so tiny to heart...at least make it darker. Your blog is lovely. Happy Thursday to you.

    1. I remember when my font was way smaller and I got lots of people saying they just can't read it because it was just such a strain on the eyes, I always wanted it easy for people to see and understand and once I raised the font level on all parts of the blog, I began getting more comments thanking me...so I thought I would pass it along to you...happy blogging...

  17. Ok, my friend, I would have freaked out huge large! I love watching them from the inside out, we had two get in the house a while back and I thought I was going to loose it. I admire your actions of getting this little guy back in the environment he should be in. hugs ~lynne ~

  20. Phyllis, these are some amazing photos of that poor little birdie! How kind of you to rescue him & how thoughtful of Tina not to try to EAT him!!
The world would be a better place if everyone were so gentle with God's creatures.

  21. Oh, I adore this story. Tiny hummingbirds are generally so evasive, but you've captured some outstanding photos of this sweet traveler. The story is amazing. I'm going to share this with some of my non-blogging friends. They'll love it, too! Thanks for inviting us to meet Mr. Hummer. Cherry Kay

  22. Oh how I loved reading your narrative of Mr. Hummer! Poor little thing- injured and needing attention. I thought the cat just peering at him was adorable. We had a hummingbird in our house in the fall. He came in, we believe, from his perch inside the basket on the front door. He flew up to the ceiling in the great room, where we have 18 foot ceilings. It took us about 45 minutes to finally capture him inside an extended mop. We stood on the 2nd floor catwalk and tried to rein him in numerous times, but he just kept flitting around. I know he must have been tired! I'm sure he was glad to be free of us, as well!
